Ian was Director of the University of the West of England Centre for Performing Arts from 2008-2016, where he managed the creative hub of almost 30,000 students and 5,000 staff. His numerous roles included directing, conducting and performing, organising large scale concerts at venues such as Colston Hall, Bristol Cathedral and St Georges Bristol, and welcoming students, staff, alumni and friends to become involved with the many activities.

He is an experienced teacher of brass and piano, with a particular specialism working with players on a consultancy basis, focusing on performance issues. He has taught all ages and levels, as well as being Assistant Director of Music at Clifton College and Director of Music at Colston's School in Bristol.
